It’s language learning week and we’re getting acquainted with PILAT (Program in Language Acquisition Techniques). Even if Ryan and I won’t have an entirely new language to learn, we will be learning idioms, expressions and other cultural nuances. I’m loving this because of my linguistics background and also our teacher this week was my mentor when I first came through this training pre-Ryan. It’s been wonderful to reconnect with Nancy.A big part of this training is working with a language helper. This means practicing language learning techniques with a native speaker. Ryan is learning Indonesian and I am learning Urhobo (a Nigerian language). Although we are learning the language in some ways, we are more importantly learning the technique. And as always language learning is a window into the culture. Urhobo has limited color words. We are also spending a lot of time working through the practicalities of learning languages. This leads to a lot of discussions and sharing of experiences. I’ve had the privilege of sharing my language learning story and was also on a panel to answer some other questions related to language learning. It’s been fun to share my love of language.Next week we will be spending more time out and about in the community again but for now we continue enjoying the process, living and learning together.
